Declared as protected area for endangered species in 1984, Aralam wildlife sanctuary is s located at the foothills of Western Ghat and just 60 km away from the Kannur district of Kerala. Covering an area of 55 sq km, the topography of the place varies from 50 meter to the highest point of Katti Betta at 1145 meter. The mangrove and dense forest cover of the sanctuary offers shelter to the several species of animals and birds. Climate- due to the varied altitude, the climate of the sanctuary also changes from place to place. At lower level, the temperature remains from 21 to 40 degree C while at the higher altitude it downs up to 8 degree celcious. The wildlife sanctuary gets annual rainfall of 3000 mm during June and August. Vegetation- owing to the diverse altitude, the sanctuary has wide range of vegetation which includes forest coast tropical evergreen and west coast semi evergreen forest in which Vellapine (Vateria indica), Mesua ferrea, Mechilus macranth, Calophyllum eletum, Cullenia rosayroona, Magnifera indica, Toona cillata, Myristica species, Euphoria longana, Strobilanthes are important one. Fauna- The lush green valley of the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary provides shelter to the several species of mammals, reptiles and avian life.
