Situated in Kerala state of India, along the western Ghat, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the finest sanctuaries of the state. Declared as wildlife sanctuary in 1958, the sanctuary covers an area of 128 sq km and an ideal home to flora and fauna of the region. Located just 32 km from Trivandrum, It is part of beautiful Neyyar Reservoir which is hub of tourist destinations and here you can enjoy boating and many more. The sanctuary lies very near to the majestic peak Agasthyakoodam Peak. In this way the sanctuary has lot to offer for the tourists recreation and adventure. Flora and Fauna- The vegetation of the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is diverse and changes from tropical wet evergreen to grassland according to the topography, thus the sanctuary provides an ideal shelter to the endangered species of animals and avian life. During your visit to the sanctuary you can see variety of mammals such as Elephant, Elephants, Sloth Bears, Nilgiri Tahrs, Gaur, Sambars, Barking Deer, Indian Porcupines, Malabar Squirrels, Tigers, Lion-tailed Macaques, Jungle Cats, Wild Boars and Nilgiri Langurs and reptiles such as pythons, cobra, vipers, Rat snakes, Flying snakes and lizards. Apart from the mammals and reptiles, the Neyyar Wildlife sanctuary also attracts several endangered species of avian life for instance king Fishers, white-breasted Water Hen, Little Green Heron, Woodpeckers, Indian Cuckoos, Gray jungle Fowl, Common Mynas, Indian hill Mynas, Darters, Little Cormorants, Little Egrets, Brahminy kites etc. Apart from wildlife sanctuary, you can visit other places such as the Crocodile Farm, Deer Farm, and Lion Safari Park. Even you can experience boat ride in the Neyyar Lake. Trekking to Agastiar Peak is also the best option for adventure in the Gods own country Kerala. |
