Peppara Wildlife sanctuary, located just 50 km away from Trivandrum, the capital of god’s own country, Kerala, is established in 1983 to preserve the eco system of the nearby area. The sanctuary is expanded to 53 sq km of area and shares its boundary with Palode reserve and Kottor Reserve. The Peppara Dam is located amidst the park, enhances the beauty of the Park and solves water problems of nearby people as well as several animals. As far as topography of the sanctuary is concerned, it varies from 100 to 1500 meter from the sea level. Vegetation- The surrounding of the sanctuary gets average rainfall of 2500 millimeter, thus, vegetation of the park also varies according to the place. The major flora boasts of west coast semi-evergreen, Myristica swamp forest, west coast tropical evergreen, sun-montane hill valley swamp forest, Southern hilltop tropical evergreen etc in which Terminalia paniculta, T. bellerica, Pterocarpus marsupium,Palaquium ellipticum, Mesua ferrea, Hopea parviflora, Bombax ceiba, Syzyguium cummini,Lagerstroemia lanceolata, Albizzia procera, Alstonia scholaris, etc are important trees. Wildlife Attractions- The sanctuary has caught attention of wildlife enthusiasts and ornithologists. It provides shelter to 43 species of mammals in which tiger, leopard, sloth bear, elephant, Sambar (deer), bonnet macaque, nilgiri langur, nilgiri tahr etc are important. It is also an ideal home to 233 speices of residential and migratory birds. Carter, little cormorant, pied king fisher and egrets can be found normally in the jungle. Even you can explore 46 species of reptiles for instance cobra and python. The sanctuary is the remarkable place for the exploration of variety of butterflies.
