Shenduruni Wildlife sanctuary has got its name from the local tree Shenduruny which grows abundantly in the region. Established in 1984, the sanctuary is situated in Pathanapuram Taluk, 66 km from Kollam town on the highway of Kollam and Shencotta. The park is expanded to an area of 100.32 km and falls under the Thenmala Forest Division before its construction. At the middle of the sanctuary you can see a beautiful artificial lake, built by the Thenmala (Parappar) Dam, lies between the Shenduruny and Kulathupuzha River.

As far as vegetation of the sanctuary is concerned, it varies according to the altitude. You can find west coast tropical evergreen forest, west coast tropical semi-evergreen forest, southern moist mixed deciduous forest and southern hilltop tropical evergreen forest. Even tropical evergreen forest covers one fourth of the total area of the sanctuary. The natural wealth of the park includes elephants, gaur, leopards, Nilgiri languor, Spotted Deer, barking deer, boars, bonnet macaque etc.

Apart from wildlife attractions, the sanctuary is also notable for its rich heritage. According to recent archeological investigations, the region is home to one of the oldest River Valley civilization in India-even older than Indus valley Settlement, date goes back to 4400 to 3700 BC. Archeologist have found Stone Age cave, dating 5210-4420 BC, where more than 20 persons can live together at a time. The cave contains some murals similar to the Mesolithic Paintings found in the central India.
